Your first day working in a hospital is likely going to require an early start. The way you’re dressed is the last thing you want to worry about when getting ready for work. The first few days will likely involve a hefty amount of orientation work, and this process can help you prepare for the challenges of working in the medical field.
Get Good Shoes
Don’t buy expensive shoes, but get a pair that are comfortable. Consider buying gel inserts to help make a less expensive pair of shoes feel better. You’re going to be on your feet a lot, so avoid buying shoes that aren’t comfortable. Find a good mix between value and expense since you may have to replace your shoes if they get destroyed at work.
Find a Good Watch
Again, don’t spend a lot of money, but get a good watch that is waterproof. You’re going to need to make rounds and it’s important to be on time. While there are clocks in most hospitals, it’s better to have your own watch so you don’t have to worry about clocks that are not synced correctly. Choosing a watch with an alarm that vibrates is also good to ensure you wake up after your naps.
Save Your Money
An important rule about working in a hospital is to not spend more than you have to. Consider using Scrubs and Beyond coupons and/or buy your scrubs in advance to avoid paying more than you have to. It’s also a good idea to buy more than one set of scrubs, so you don’t have to worry about your laundry during the week. Don’t buy expensive clothing, it’s very likely you are going to need to throw your clothes out often.
Bleach Pens
For minor spills, you can use a bleach pen on the job to keep your scrubs looking fresh. It’s a good idea to bring a spare pair in just in case you do need to change in the middle of your rounds.
Ditch the Extras
Avoid cologne or perfume. Even scented deodorant should be avoided. Remember, you are working in a hospital where people have allergies, and you don’t want to aggravate symptoms.
Additionally, while you may be excited about your new job, if you take public transportation to work, make sure to bring a change of clothes for the way home. It is hospital policy in most places to change out of your scrubs before you leave. This helps to keep germs out of the community.
